The flag in the background says 'Come and Take It" This is the kind of backlash that occurs when cultural icons, like the Southern Cross are vilified by the Media. This flag was adopted as a uniform emblem by Confederate Veterans...AFTER the war, and was only flown in battle by the Army of Northern Virginia. Sure, there are plenty of racist flag wavers out there. They wave the American flag too. Are you going to take it down if some lunatic has his picture taken with it? Of course not. For most of us, this flag is a badge of honor, born by our southern ancestors who suffered during the reconstruction of the South. For the ignorant and uninformed out there who don't know, only a wealthy minority owned slaves in the south. To put it in perspective, it would be like buying a Mercedes off the showroom floor. The other 90% of the population were poor dirt farmers, like my folks. But after the war, Lincoln made sure every Southerner who fought for succession suffered. We wanted to be free of the United States government, in the same way the early colonists wanted to be free of England. Those wealthy plantation owners weren't the ones dying on the fields of battle....almost half a million Confederate soldiers lost their lives. So tell me again what those poor, non-slave owing southern men where fighting for? We honor them. And we will continue to do so. How Southern am I? My standard "Lincolns birthday" post is: R.I.P. you S.O.B.
