Epiphyllum "Tesla" is a Green Chapel Farms original Hybrid. A cross of Grace Ann and Over the Top. She displays many of Grace Anns traits, but has darker colors toward the center of the flower, and a nice frilled white edge. This variety can produce flowers 8 to 10 inches in diameter. A must see and must have for the Epi Collector or rare plant fancier. Best of all, these plants are fool-proof. Treat as a cactus, and allow it to dry before watering. We recommend growing "Tesla" in a hanging basket or heavy clay pot, as it can become quite top heavy. Epiphyllums are one of the most exotic and easiest to grow plants you can have in your garden. Although a true cactus, in the wild they are found in the rain forests of Central and South America not in dry arid deserts. Generally, blooming season is late spring thru summer. Branches grow 18 to 24 inches a year.
Epiphyllums need filtered sunlight. 50% sun, 50% shade is ideal. In hotter climates up to 80% shade can be used. In winter the plants must be protected from freezing. Young tender growth should be covered at 36 degrees and under. They are best grown in pots, but may be planted in the ground and trellised with a little finessing. Epiphyllums do not like “wet feet”. Over watering is the easiest way to kill them. They are not picky about what you feed them. A balanced slow release fertilizer of 10 – 10 – 10 works very well.
